I have one windows r2 standard server which is in production application server. I have to upgrade this server to Enterprise edition. This is really simple procedure. Here is the link i'm going to follow. But, My question is - What is the effect if i upgrade the server from standard enterprise? What is pre-work i have to do before i upgrade. You need to make sure that you have at least GB of free space on the drive where the OS is loaded.

As long as you aren't changing from to and just Standard to Enterprise you should be Ok with the upgrade. SQL supports the Version not the type But since you are only upgrading you are adding features not taking away.

I would perform the upgrade and verify it's functional as expected. Then shutdown and add the RAM. If you want to test it, just install Standard on another computer or VM and attempt to upgrade. Let's see. What happen during upgrade.

I did it in less than an hour as I recall, it was no big deal. I did this on our production SQL server as we needed to up the RAM, usual caveats about backups and what not but this worked flawlessly with nary a hiccup.

If something goes wrong, is there any way to go back to normal activity? Once you upgrade to Enterprise there is no downward path to Standard. You'll have to reinstall and restore from backup.
